The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD V2 1TB is one of the best portable SSDs at its current price point — fast, genuinely rugged, and backed by a 5-year warranty. The IP65 rating and 3-meter drop protection are among the best in class at this size. The well-publicized data corruption issue in the V2 family is real but concentrates heavily in 2TB and 4TB units — 1TB buyers face significantly lower risk, and Western Digital has shipped updated production units with reinforced solder joints. Still, given the history, always maintain a backup of any irreplaceable data. For photographers, travelers, and content creators who understand that rule, this is an excellent drive at a compelling price.
Speed — Real-World NVMe Performance
The SDSSDE61 uses NVMe internally, not the SATA protocol found in many cheaper portable SSDs. Peak figures of 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write are genuine — StorageReview measured 1.04GB/s sequential read and 1.02GB/s write in multi-thread IOMeter testing. Tom's Hardware confirmed consistent performance through the 1TB variant's SLC cache. The important caveat: like all TLC-based SSDs with a small SLC write cache, very large sustained transfers (moving 100GB+ in a single session) will eventually saturate the cache and drop to direct-to-TLC write speeds. For photographers offloading SD cards and videographers transferring daily footage, this never matters in practice — it only affects bulk archive operations.
Durability — IP65, 3-Meter Drop, Silicone Shell
The IP65 rating means the drive is fully dust-tight (no ingress at all) and protected against low-pressure water jets from any direction — more than enough for rain, splashes, or dusty shoot locations.
